The Pathless may be the game for you, but it's not the game for me.Giant Squid’s action-adventure title The Pathless was easily one of the most underrated games of 2020, delivering a hypnotic experience that boasted slick traversal and movement, rewarding exploration, and a gorgeous art style. Pathless seems to be inspired by Journey and Gris but misses the crucial lessons from these games, as Gris also dragged on a bit too long and Journey diversified the landscape and didn't have the irritating traversal mechanic. The concept and mechanics work great in theory, but in practice I didn't enjoy a lot of the game. Overall, The Pathless is a critically-acclaimed indie darling that just doesn't do it for me. However, similar to the gameplay, I didn't find much encouragement to persevere through the irksome puzzles to learn the conclusion, which I'm guessing involves defeating Godslayer and purifying all the land anyway. You do meet the Godslayer early in the game and I found that rather compelling, and I also don't mind the diary trope as it allows the player to invest in the story at their leisure. The story of The Pathless is told via the cliche of picking up dribs and drabs from what are essentially diaries as you explore. Of course I could be wrong, but the game didn't offer anything to show me otherwise. I played until after the first boss fight and had had enough of the gameplay because it felt like the path ahead was predictable and monotonous, as well as feeling like I've already experienced the majority of what the game has to offer. I found it very arduous that the game basically lays its progression out before you early on, in that I could see three elongated puzzles and boss fights ahead. From what I played, the rest of the game is similarly protracted. Shooting the crystals to refill the energy bar can make for skilled traversal, but this fundamental mechanic became very tiring for me and repetitive to the extreme. The gameplay also leaves a nice first impression but irritated me the longer I played. When boss battles commence the graphics show their true colours and this is quite a sight but also falls into being a bit one-dimensional once you see the patterns and style. My qualm with these graphics is that I don't think they do the game enough justice, especially in the opening hours where everything is dark and morose. Generally nothing overly complex, but smooth and fluid graphics that are similar to cell-shading make for a pleasant first impression. As mentioned, the graphics of The Pathless immediately drew my thoughts back to Journey. So why am I lamenting rather than lauding its achievements? I'll explain below. ![]() The Pathless has received near-universal critical acclaim and it's not hard to see why from the premise it comes from an indie-darling The Pathless has received near-universal critical acclaim and it's not hard to see why from the premise it comes from an indie-darling perspective, touting similar graphics and game mechanics to highly regarded titles such as Journey, Gris and Abzu. ![]() But with all of that said, it's a good game, with the spark of greatness flickering inside. And, of course, a final level that didn't feel so disappointingly empty would have been nice. On top of that, each of the bosses is functionally the same. Most of the game is thrillingly "pathless" but the boss battles are scripted to hell, and as unsatisfying as the core game is satisfying. Really, the thing this game needed were boss battles which actually incorporated the core gameplay. The final levels are really thin on content, and the final encounter with the boss is beyond unsatisfying. ![]() I'd have gotten past it without much issue, but the game loses a lot of steam in its final hours. Compared to the core gameplay, the boss battles and scripted encounters are so bad that they feel like parts of a different game. Boss encounters and battles feel very plain, kinda wonky, and get repetitive almost immediately. Where the game comes up short (sometimes VERY short) is in its combat and endgame content. Think Journey meets Shadow of the Colossus. The core gameplay is incredibly impressive, the sound and art are impeccable, and the puzzles just genuinely feel good. Step by step photos: how to make easy homemade baked macaroni and cheese The whole top layer of mac and cheese has this nice golden brown texture. This easy recipe is definitely worth making and is a great base recipe for further experiments! The baked macaroni and cheese when served straight out of the oven come out creamy, buttery, with very crisp breadcrumbs on top. The breadcrumbs do become soggy if you reheat this dish in microwave, so to make the most out of this recipe, I would not recommend making it in advance and then reheating: too many qualities are lost. If leftovers are reheated the next day, the macaroni get mushy, and the sauce itself get thicker, so you have to add milk and manipulate to achieve the same wonderful consistency as on the day you made it. I highly recommend halving the recipe for this baked mac and cheese, because 1) I can't imagine using a total of 6 cups of cheese for any kind of dish (3 cups will do), and 2) because I found that this mac and cheese has the best and the creamiest quality when served right after it's made. A reminder to myself: always pay attention to what salt the recipe calls for: Kosher or table salt. Also, the recipe calls for Kosher salt, which is less salty than table salt, so because I used regular table salt, I reduced the salt amount accordingly. I also reduced the amount of cheese to sprinkle over top as the original amount called for in the recipe seemed excessive. Even after I halved the recipe, it still produced quite a lot of pasta - enough to make 6 or 8 very rich servings. ![]() Martha's recipe for mac and cheese calls for 1 pound of elbow macaroni, which produces a huge amount of pasta, so I halved the recipe, using ½ pound of elbow macaroni instead of 1 pound, and halving the rest of ingredients. ![]() For once, however, I decided I wanted to make a "real" homemade mac and cheese: very traditional, using regular cheese (such as cheddar), baked in the oven, and using white sauce.Īs I was looking for an easy homemade baked macaroni and cheese recipe, a lot of sources seemed to be pointing to Martha Stewart macaroni and cheese, so that seemed like a good place to start. There is evidence to suggest that even these wild trees were selections made by indigenous populations. Many of the pawpaw varieties available today are selections of superior trees found in the wild. A seed from an Arkansas Black apple may bear fruit that is outrageously different from its parent, but a seed from a Sunflower pawpaw will produce a tree with similar qualities. ![]() This is unlike other fruits, apples for example, that offer a more widely varied lineage. Pawpaws are considered true to heredity meaning the trees (and fruits thereof) are fairly similar to their parents. The traits from the two parent trees create a distinctly new individual. On the other hand, sexually multiplied pawpaws create a wider gene pool. For fruit production purposes this is less than ideal because 2 or more individuals are needed for proper pollination and fruit set. Each root sucker is a clone of the mother and thus genetically identical. The trees sucker readily and can grow into dense thickets. Pawpaws naturally multiply in two ways: sexually (through fruit and subsequent seed production) and asexually (by suckering from roots of established trees.) Commonly seen as dozens or hundreds of trees, pawpaw patches are often clones of one or more individual trees. Wild pawpaw seedlings grown out from seed in an air prune bed. Balanced audio does this by carrying two copies of the audio signal in reverse polarity and cancelling out any induced interference.īefore getting into a more in-depth explanation of balanced audio, let's revisit our 3-pin XLR. What is balanced audio? Balanced audio is a method of connecting audio equipment that allows audio signals to travel through long lengths of cable effectively without loss of clarity. Let's discuss each of these in more detail. Now there are two main reasons why professional microphones use XLR: balanced audio and microphone protection. This is the basic microphone connection via XLR to another device. You could also do this in the reverse order. ![]() Connect the male XLR of the cable to the audio interface's mic input (female XLR).Connect the microphone output (male XLR) to the female XLR connector of the cable. The female 3-pin XLR connector has its 3 pins act as jacks (sockets) that receive the male 3-pin XLR when connected.Male 3-pin XLRs insert into female 3-pin XLRs when connected. The male 3-pin XLR connector has 3 pins that act as plugs. If we look at a standard 3-pin XLR cable, we'll see two connection points: one 3-pin male XLR connector at one end and one 3-pin female XLR connector at the other. These mic inputs are practically all 3-pin female XLR connectors. Similarly, the vast majority of microphone inputs (whether they be in a mixing console, audio interface, audio snake, adaptor, or standalone mic preamps or processors) have an XLR input. For right now, let's keep discussing microphones and XLR. Of course, there are other connection types for microphones, and we'll get to those later. These mics, generally speaking, have a 3-pin male XLR connector. Most professional standalone microphones (whether they be moving-coil dynamic, condenser, or ribbon mics) have an XLR output. Related article: Top 11 Best XLR Cable Brands In The World We'll also discuss the alternative microphone connections that are commonly on the market today. Let's dive deeper into the design of XLR cables and why they are so effective as microphone connections. XLR has become a popular option for professional microphone connections due to its clean sound and protective qualities. Balanced audio provides clean audio transfer across long cable lengths, and a ground-pin-first connection protects mics from electrical damage. However, many professional microphones connect via 3-pin XLR cables because XLR carries balanced audio and connects the ground-pin first. Why do microphones use XLR cables? Not all mics use XLR. Although I had previously performed plenty of times as a guitarist, this was the first time using an XLR cable to connect a microphone to anything. Whether you are a musician, a sound engineer, or just someone who loves high-quality audio, this cable is sure to meet your needs. In my time studying audio engineering in college, I remember connecting a microphone to a mic preamp for the first time. Overall, an Enova audio cable with connector A "XLR male 3pin" and connector B "Jack male 3pin" is a great choice for anyone looking for a high-quality, balanced audio cable that can be used in professional and consumer audio setups. The connectors are sturdy and reliable, and the cable itself is durable and flexible, making it easy to use in a variety of settings. In addition to its balanced design, this Enova audio cable is also made with high-quality materials and construction. This helps to cancel out any external noise or interference that may be present, resulting in a clean and clear audio signal. A balanced audio cable uses two conductors for the audio signal, with one conductor carrying the positive portion of the signal and the other conductor carrying the negative portion. One of the key features of this Enova audio cable is that it is balanced, which means that it is designed to reduce or eliminate noise and interference in the audio signal.
